Easter Island, a remote land
Easter Island, or Rapa Nui, meaning “the navel of the world” in the local language, is one of the most isolated islands in the world. It is located in the Pacific Ocean, 3,000 km from the coast of South America.
This small volcanic island, covering only 160 km², is home to gigantic monolithic statues representing busts, known as Moai. Today, there are 1,064 Moai statues.
Discovery of the island
This small volcanic rock was discovered by the Dutch explorer Jakob Roggeveen on Easter Day in 1722. At the time of its discovery, the island was an unknown, mysterious, and astonishing land, hiding strange “inhabitants” — the stone giants. These monolithic statues with enormous heads measured on average 4 to 6 meters in height and weighed between 5 and 15 tons each.
Mystery and meaning of the Moai
Even today, the Moai continue to intrigue us. Several theories have been proposed regarding their origin. According to some, the statues were carved by a brilliant megalithic civilization, the Rapanui, the ancient Polynesian inhabitants of the island. They created monumental sculptures carved from volcanic tuff using stone tools.
The ancient inhabitants believed in mana, the embodiment of a spiritual power that protected the tribe and ensured fertility and prosperity. The Moai symbolized faith, power, and the protection of the village. Each statue represented a person who, during their lifetime, possessed a powerful mana due to heroic deeds. To preserve this mana within the tribe, their image was carved in stone and erected on an altar. If a Moai was overturned, it lost its mana. Without the protection of these giants, each settlement was doomed to destruction and oblivion.
Alternative theories
Others believe that the stone giants were created by an extraterrestrial civilization, which also left traces on other islands. Or by a terrestrial civilization aided by beings from the sky.
Information intended for humans suggests that one of the “artificial” centers helping to maintain Earth’s gravity, acting as a gateway to other cosmic worlds and passages to planet Earth, may be linked to the Moai. Only the Moai know the answer.
