Lake Turkana

A unique lake in the Rift Valley
Lake Turkana, located in the Rift Valley, is shared between Kenya and Ethiopia. This body of water is the most alkaline lake in East Africa. With an area of 6,400 km², Turkana is the largest permanent desert lake in the world.
Volcanic landscape and colors
Black volcanic rocks appear on the surface of the lake. The green color of its waters is caused by the presence of minerals and microscopic algae.
The shores of the lake meet several volcanoes rising above a plain of lava and ash. The circular crater of Mount Nabyatom is located at the southern end of the lake. The waters of the crater have a jade-like color.
