His father was a surgeon, assistant major at the military hospital of Metz and lieutenant to the king\u2019s chief surgeon.<\/p>\n<p>Following his father\u2019s example, Antoine also became a surgeon. He practiced military medicine and served as surgeon-major of a regiment during the Flanders campaign.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Medical achievements<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In <strong>1749<\/strong>, he obtained his medical thesis on the subject <em>\u201cDe vuln\u00e9ribus capitus\u201d<\/em> (Injuries to the head).<\/p>\n<p><strong>The origin of the guillotine<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>At the request of <strong>Doctor Guillotin (1738\u20131814)<\/strong>, who wished to reduce the suffering of those condemned during executions, Antoine Louis designed in <strong>1792<\/strong> a machine capable of decapitating quickly and without pain. Initially, it bore the name of the young surgeon and was called <strong>\u201cLouison.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>First execution<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The first execution using this machine took place at the <strong>Place de Gr\u00e8ve on 25 April 1792<\/strong>. The first person executed was <strong>Nicolas Jacques Pelletier<\/strong>, who had stabbed a passerby several times to steal his money.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Later life and death<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Unmarried and without children, Antoine Louis was secretary of the Royal Academy of Surgery, professor, and chief surgeon of the Salp\u00eatri\u00e8re. The brilliant physician also earned a doctorate in law and became a lawyer at the Parliament of Paris. In <strong>1763<\/strong>, he presented a dissertation describing a case of death by hanging and explained the characteristic signs distinguishing suicide from murder.<\/p>\n<p>Antoine Louis died on <strong>20 May 1792<\/strong> in Paris.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Historical legacy<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>History has remembered <strong>Doctor Guillotin<\/strong> as the inventor of the guillotine.
