Driven by violent winds, the flames spread rapidly through Rome\u2019s tightly packed wooden structures, racing up the <strong>Palatine Hill<\/strong> and into the city\u2019s densely populated districts.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A City in Flames<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The fire raged for <strong>seven to nine days<\/strong>, overwhelming firefighters and plunging the city into chaos. As the inferno consumed homes, temples, and public buildings, many residents saw their possessions and families lost to the blaze. Works of art brought from <strong>Greece and the East<\/strong> were destroyed, and <strong>public libraries\u2019 manuscripts<\/strong> were turned into burning torches.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rumors, Blame, and the Emperor<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In the aftermath, fear and panic gripped Rome. Rumors spread that <strong>Emperor Nero<\/strong> had ordered the fire to <strong>clear space for the reconstruction of the city<\/strong> according to his own vision. Some tales even claimed he sought inspiration for his epic poem about the <em>Capture of Troy<\/em>. Others accused him of wanting to raze the old city entirely.<\/p>\n<p>Amid the confusion, an official accusation was also made against the small group of <strong>Christians<\/strong>, whose mysterious rites were believed by some to have angered the Roman gods. Around <strong>200 Christians were arrested and executed<\/strong>, including by burning, reportedly on Nero\u2019s orders.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Historical Accounts and Legacy<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Roman historian <strong>Tacitus<\/strong> described the fire in his <em>Annals<\/em> (15:38), hoping that this tragic event would not be forgotten.
